בוגר החוגים להיסטוריה של ארצות האסלאם וכלכלה באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.PhD אוניברסיטת לונדון, ביה"ס ללימודי המזרח ואפריקה (SOAS).
מחקריו דנים בהתפתחויות הכלכליות באיראן בתקופה הקאג'ארית המאוחרת, בתמורות דמוגרפיות במדינות ערב במאה ה-20 ובהיבטים כלכליים של הסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי. נושא שתפס מקום מרכזי בעבודתו היה חקר השפעתם הכלכלית והפוליטית של הסוחרים הגדולים (תג'אר) המוסלמים במזרח התיכון בתקופת הגלובליזציה הראשונה.
כיהן כרקטור האוניברסיטה בשנים 1997-2000 והיה קודם לכן חבר במועצה להשכלה גבוהה (מל"ג).היה עמית במכון ללימודים מתקדמים בירושלים, עמית מחקר בכיר במרכז משה דיין באוניברסיטת תל אביב ופרופ' אורח באוניברסיטאות הרווארד, ליהיי ומכון ראנד.
