Dr. Jose Maria Andres Porras is a medieval historian. He completed a BA in History and Political Science and an MA in History at the University of Haifa, writing a thesis on political exile under the supervision of Yossi Ziegler. In 2023 he completed a DPhil in history at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford, under the supervision of Hannah Skoda (soon to be published as Blood and Identity in Early Renaissance Florence by OUP). He then taught as a lecturer at Wadham College and in 2025 took up a position as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the School of Civic Life and Leadership, he teaches a wide range of courses on medieval Europe, Dante and the Early Renaissance, the history and philosophy of science, and the history of education and the university. His research explores the intellectual, cultural, and social history of Western Europe in the late Middle Ages with particular emphasis on the history of the body and medicine. His long-standing engagement with these topics has led to collaborations on a range of medical humanities projects, conferences, and reading groups. Of late, he has been thinking about social ontology and its relation to a host of philosophical issues such as individuation, mereology, and organicism.
